Romania's CFR SA national railway carrier is joining today the ILCAD - International Level Crossing Awareness Day initiative, now in its seventeenth edition, designed to improve awareness of level crossing safety and reduce the number of incidents generated by reckless behaviour near railway lines.
According to the company, the initiative is coordinated by the International Union of Railways (UIC) and annually brings together railway and road administrations from over 45 countries.
This year's theme is: "Helping people make good decisions," and the slogan of the campaign is "Safe decisions - every time," focusing on accident prevention through individual responsibility.
According to CFR SA data, in 2022-2024, there was a clear downward trend in the number of incidents: in 2022 there were 158 incidents, in 2023, the number of incidents was 154, and in 114 incidents.
"This development reflects the efficiency of the prevention measures and information actions undertaken in recent years, but also the need to continue these efforts to achieve the objective of constant risk mitigation."
Currently, Romania's railway network is 19,629 km long, and there are 5,015 level crossings.
While participating in the ILCAD 2025 campaign, CFR SA is running, at national level, its own accountability campaign - "Be cautious! Level crossings are merciless!" The actions are carried out both online, through the company's official communication channels, and offline, by displaying informative materials at all railway stations in Romania.
"The central message is clear: level crossing safety depends on the decisions of each road user. Observance of light, acoustic and road signals, stopping at the barrier or at the Cross of St. Andrew, and getting assured before crossing the railway tracks are essential conditions for avoiding tragedies. CFR SA reaffirms its firm commitment to increasing the degree of safety in the operation of the railway infrastructure. By modernising the signalling installations, optimising the intersections between the road and rail networks, and intensifying public information campaigns, the company actively contributes to the prevention of incidents. In partnership with international bodies such as UIC and by aligning with the best European practices in terms of safety, CFR SA aims to contribute to a safer, more efficient and more responsible railway system."
