Justice Minister Radu Marinescu met on Thursday with European Commissioner for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection Michael McGrath, with whom he discussed, among other topics, stepping up efforts to prevent and combat corruption.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Justice sent to AGERPRES, the agenda of the meeting included the progress made by Romania in the context of the Rule of Law Report, which falls within the European Commissioner's portfolio.
The dialogue focused on recent developments at national level, particularly regarding the judicial system, improving the efficiency of the justice system and intensifying efforts to prevent and combat corruption, the quoted source said.
'The Justice Minister voiced his appreciation for the European Commissioner's constant involvement in interinstitutional dialogue and for the efficient and solid cooperation, both at political and technical level, on matters concerning the Rule of Law. In this context, reference was made to the recent country visit by representatives of the European Commission, which provided the opportunity for substantial dialogue with national authorities and relevant stakeholders from the judicial system and civil society,' the statement reads.
Marinescu welcomed the European Commission's recent initiatives aimed at strengthening democracy in the EU, such as the European Democracy Shield and the EU Strategy for Civil Society, considering that they contribute to the development of stronger, more transparent and more resilient democracies across the Union.
According to the press release, the European Commissioner appreciated the active involvement of the Ministry of Justice in the annual Rule of Law exercise, stressing that Romania is an 'active' and 'committed' partner in the European dialogue on this topic. At the same time, McGrath conveyed assurances of continued loyal and constructive cooperation with the national authorities in order to strengthen the rule of law and the fundamental values of the European Union.
