The Romanian Customs Authority (AVR) has commissioned 15 X-ray scanning devices for non-intrusive customs control of parcels, hand luggage, and pallets, the institution announced in a press release sent to AGERPRES on Thursday.
The new equipment has been installed at the following Border Customs Offices: Galati-Giurgiulesti, Oancea, Albita, Sculeni, Stanca-Costesti, Siret, Moravita, Portile de Fier I, Constanta South, Halmeu, Otopeni Passengers, Cluj-Napoca Airport, and Postal Customs.
According to the source, the scanners were purchased under the project "Improving the Efficiency of the Romanian Customs Authority's Control Activity," with a total value of 17,183,300 euros.
The project is co-financed by the European Union, acting as the granting authority represented by the European Commission, with funding provided through the Customs Control Equipment Instrument (CCEI).
The AVR uses advanced scanning systems to: significantly increase security at the EU's external borders by efficiently preventing and detecting illicit shipments and customs and/or tax fraud attempts, thereby reducing cross-border criminal activity; reduce waiting times at border points and streamline the customs control process through the use of advanced scanning technology; enhance coordination of control activities through real-time imaging monitoring and analysis; improve customs services by optimising the interventions of operational control teams both at the border and throughout the country, in order to protect the financial interests of Romania and the European Union.
