Rule of law is observed in Romania, Prime Minister Viorica Dancila gave assurances in Brussels, at the plenary session of the European Committee of Regions.
"In Romania rule of law is observed. I will reiterate what I told the European Commission President - in any member state, rule of law, citizens' rights and the fight against corruption must be a priority. I, in my capacity as prime minister, must take all these aspects into account and I guarantee you that the fight against corruption and the rule of law, as well as the citizens' rights will be a priority for me. In respect to what the Venice Commission said, I want to say that Romania's Government has only made one decision in the justice area, one emergency ordinance of Romania's Government to put into practice recommendations of the Venice Commission. As for the rest, all these accusations regarding Romania's Government, that we don't enforce certain aspects aren't proved by reality," the Prime Minister said.
Prime Minister Dancila thus replied to a question addressed by Guido Wolf on the situation of the rule of law in Romania.
"Cohesion reflects in our common values and common principles. The rule of law principle is central, an independent justice and the fight against corruption are very important for the functioning of democracy. My plea for the Romanian Government is to take into account everything the European Commission and the Venice Commission say, to take them seriously. They don't want to interfere in domestic matters, this is only about confidence in the rule of law in Europe, because without this confidence nothing can be done," Guido Wolf said within the plenary session of the European Committee of Regions.
