Romania is set to provide humanitarian aid to civilians in Lebanon, comprising 15 tonnes of food, tents and bedding supplies.
The decision was taken by the National Committee for Emergency Situations, convened by Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, in response to a request for assistance made through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, the government said in a press release.
"Romania is joining the European community in efforts to support the civilian population in Lebanon, which is facing a humanitarian crisis triggered by the security situation in the Middle East. Fifteen tonnes of food, tents and bedding items (sleeping bags, pillows, blankets, sheets and pillowcases) from national state reserves will be transported to Amman and subsequently, as part of a multinational humanitarian convoy, to Beirut," reads the release.
The aid will be transported by the Ministry of National Defence using a C-130 aircraft and a C-27J Spartan, scheduled to depart on Wednesday at 10:00.
Romania's action is carried out under the European Civil Protection framework, which will cover 75% of transport costs.
