American conductor Robert Trevino has been appointed principal conductor of the George Enescu Philharmonic, starting with the 2026-2027 season.
Aged 41, Trevino will begin his mandate in October 2026 for an initial period of four years, representatives of the George Enescu Philharmonic said in a press release sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday.
According to the source cited, the plans include creative programming, extensive international tours and recordings with Ondine Records. Trevino's appointment will also mark the launch of the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra's ambitious plans for its 160th anniversary, to be celebrated in the 2028-2029 season.
"Trevino will reunite with the George Enescu Philharmonic in August, conducting the orchestra at the Ravello Festival in Italy. The orchestra's plans together with Robert Trevino include developing and refining the ensemble's identity, enriching the repertoire, extensive international touring and the release of several recordings with Ondine Records, with which Trevino has a long-standing collaboration and where he has received numerous awards and distinctions, including Presto Music's 'Record of the Year' and a Gramophone Award nomination," the press release said.
Robert Trevino, who is also principal guest conductor of the Orchestra Sinfonica Nazionale della RAI, regularly conducts many of the world's leading orchestras. This season, he has appeared on the podium of the London Symphony Orchestra, Wiener Symphoniker, Filarmonica della Scala, Filarmonica Arturo Toscanini, Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Bamberger Symphoniker, Sinfonieorchester Basel, Orquesta Sinfonica Nacional de Mexico, the Osaka Philharmonic, among others.
The George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra, Romania's leading orchestra and one of the landmark ensembles of Eastern Europe, was founded in 1868. The great conductors who have shaped its history include George Enescu himself, George Georgescu, Constantin Silvestri, Herbert von Karajan, Sergiu Celibidache and Cristian Mandeal.
The orchestra's rich activity is reflected as naturally in the recording studio as in the concert hall. In addition to more than 300 concerts a year at the Romanian Athenaeum, the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra has recorded dozens of LPs and CDs and undertakes numerous tours in Europe, Asia and the Far East.
