The Chair of Save Romania Union (USR), Dominic Fritz, delivered a message on the occasion of International Holocaust Remembrance Day, recalling that tens of millions of people were killed by the Nazis and that tens of millions more fled the war.
He referred to the slogans and lies used during the Second World War, stressing that truth is the only antidote to "comfortable lies" and false certainties.
"They said: 'We will lift you to your feet.' They said: 'You live poorly because of Jews and traitors within.' They said they would build a strong state and bring discipline and stability. They said new territories were needed to survive. They said other countries had to be invaded to protect compatriots from persecution. They said Adolf Hitler was the only saviour of the people. In the unstable and unpredictable world after the First World War, people desperately sought any form of certainty, even a false one built on lies. Many Germans believed them and voted for them," Dominic Fritz wrote on his Facebook page on Tuesday.
He added that six million Jews were killed in the Holocaust. Tens of millions of people were murdered by the Nazis, and tens of millions more fled the war.
"There is only one antidote to these seductive slogans: to accept an uncomfortable truth rather than a comfortable lie; to resist the temptation of simple explanations and even simpler solutions. Today is International Holocaust Remembrance Day. Never, never should we treat our fellow human beings as if they were not human. Many did not have this power back then. Do we have it today? How do we strengthen it?" Dominic Fritz asked.
United Nations General Assembly Resolution 60/7 of 2005 designated 27 January as International Holocaust Remembrance Day and established the United Nations Holocaust Outreach Programme. The date was chosen as it marks the anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi German concentration and extermination camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau on 27 January 1945, according to www.un.org.
International Holocaust Remembrance Day is marked by commemorative events and activities at United Nations Headquarters in New York and at United Nations offices around the world, the cited source said.
