Social Democratic Party (PSD) president Sorin Grindeanu said on Tuesday that the coalition meeting decided to establish a commission that would include representatives of local elected officials and that would develop a point of view on the construction of the state budget for 2026.
Grindeanu was asked whether the new local tax increase would make any difference to the budget.
"Yesterday we proposed and they accepted a commission. That is why I was telling you that yesterday in the coalition, on the one hand, there were things accepted, on the other hand - we asked for clarifications and maybe we will get there. We asked for a commission with local elected officials, with representatives of county councils, mayors of municipalities, cities and communes, to come up with a point of view regarding the construction of the budget. You know that local taxes have increased and all Romanians know that they have increased by 70%, the mayors' demand is that that money remains with the local authorities. According to the law, you can't take it from the state budget, it's just that they will be taken, or they won't be anymore, the proposal coming from the Government is that the same quotas from the global income tax should no longer come to local authorities. I think the first meeting will take place tomorrow, all parties will send their representatives there, so that by next week they will come up with a common point of view," the PSD president told Gandul.ro.
He added that things must be as balanced as possible in this regard.
"If more money is being raised for local authorities, I know that this year almost all local authorities in Romania need money for co-financing on European projects. And I hope that a common point of view will be reached. We'll see," he mentioned.
