The University of Bucharest (UB) on Thursday announced the opening of a conference series "Science on an open stage", with the first edition being scheduled for Tuesday, March 17. The initiative aims to bring the general public closer to scientific culture.
According to UB, a guest of the event will be Carmen Chifiriuc, researcher and UB professor, who will hold the conference "90% germs. Who takes care of whom? Lessons for our health and that of the planet."
The conference will be organised by UB in collaboration with the SciPublic Forum Association and will take place in the Media Hall of the I. L. Caragiale National Theatre House in Bucharest. Admission is free, capped at 120.
It is part of the Science Communication Programme, a project under which the University of Bucharest organises thematic conferences, develops multimedia series to popularise research - UB Dose of Science, microSCOP: UB researcher at the microphone; Project under the magnifying glass; ICUB Meetings, and discussions with SKEPSIS, and it produces editorial content - articles, interviews, audio / video reports on its own platforms.
Tuesday's event will highlight how microorganisms have shaped the evolution of life on Earth, emphasising that the balance between microorganisms and the host organism is essential for individual and collective health.
"Beyond the scientific information, the meeting proposes a change of perspective: the shift from the idea that man is separate and dominant in relation to nature, to an integrative vision of the One Health type, in which human health, animal health and the balance of the environment are closely interconnected," according to UB.
The guests of the conferences in the "Science on an open Stage" series are professors, researchers and personalities from various fields of science.
The conference will start with a lecture of about 20 minutes dedicated to the clarification of essential concepts, followed by a first short session of questions, of 5 minutes, meant to fix the key ideas. Next, the guests will provide an applied section, of about 15 minutes, in which the discussed concepts will be illustrated by actual examples, case studies or situations relevant to everyday life. The event will end with an extensive Q&A session of about 40 minutes, encouraging the active participation of the public and deepening topics of interest.
