President Klaus Iohannis handed the Flag of Romania to the Seat Fortress of Suceava on Wednesday, during a ceremony that took place between the walls of the old edifice.
In his turn, Mayor Ion Lungu gave the President of Romania an anniversary medal of the city, and the President of the County Council, Gheorghe Flutur, handed him the plaque "Iancu Flondor" and an anniversary medal "Centennial of Bukovina's Union with the country".
"Thank you for the extremely emotional gesture, with profound significance, to hand us here, in the Seat Fortress, the Flag of Romania. An exceptional significance now, on the eve of the Centennial, honoring the memory of those who achieved the Greater Union," said the president of Suceava County Council, Gheorghe Flutur.
The event was also attended by the Mayor of Alba Iulia, Mircea Hava, who received from the hosts a pot of land from the Seat Fortress of Suceava, where a beech is planted.
"Receiving a pot with soil from this citadel that was never conquered for hundreds of years might seem to many a gesture like any other. And this demonstrates your spirit of free men, who know how to fight for what you have. It is a bit of soil that is sprinkled with blood, which witnessed all your fights, all your unrest," said Mayor Mircea Hava.
Upon leaving Suceava Citadel, President Klaus Iohannis, visiting Bukovina for the third time during his term, said he was moved by the event and commended the local initiatives.
"I came with excitement, I came to honor a great deed of Bukovina, which decided to come back to its country, Romania, 100 years ago. A very beautiful, emotional ceremony, and I am very glad that Bukovina is developing so beautifully, very many local initiatives, many successful initiatives. I wish all Bukovinians success and all the best," said President Klaus Iohannis.
At the exit of the Citadel of Suceava, President Iohannis was expected by a group of children who sang "Lord, Protect the Romanians".
Prior to the visit to the Citadel, the President of Romania laid a flower wreath to the statue of Iancu Flondor, in the Central Park of Suceava, after which he visited the Bukovina Museum.
