President Nicusor Dan said on Tuesday in Helsinki that he does not support justice professionals yielding to political influence.
He called for the justice system to be managed from within.
"Currently, we have elected structures - I emphasise 'elected' - both at the level of the Superior Council of the Magistracy and the courts. It is important that, through the selection process, the best magistrates - a relatively small group of around 7,000 people, most of whom are known - reach leadership positions and guide the justice system. On the other hand, there is a legislative aspect, and when we have the agreement to make legislative adjustments, we should do so. However, I do not support the judiciary as a whole ceding control to the political sphere. On the contrary, if there are political adjustments to be made, we should make them, but the justice system should govern itself," President Dan said.
The president invited Romanian magistrates to Cotroceni Presidential Palace on 22 December for an open-ended discussion on justice system issues.
He was in Finland on Monday and Tuesday for the EU Eastern Flank Summit.
