The European Commission's decision to approve Romania's application for funding via SAFE (Security Action for Europe) is a very good news, president of Romania Nicusor Dan stated on Friday, while specifying that our country received 16 billion euros, the second largest amount granted to a Member State, which makes this a strategic opportunity for our country to speed up the necessary investments in the national defence industry.

"The European Commission's decision to approve Romania's application for funding via SAFE, which will grant us 16 billion euros, is a very good news. This money will be for acquisitions, projects and essential investments in security already planned by Romania, which would have costed us a lot more if we were to finance ourselves," Nicusor Dan wrote on Facebook.

The president also mentioned that our country gets the second largest amount granted to a Member State, which is a strategic opportunity for us to speed up the necessary investments in reviving the national defence industry.

"This money will massively contribute to the creation of new well-paid jobs and to the modernisation of the transport infrastructure, including here one project that is among the most important to us and that we must complete as soon as possible, the Moldova motorway, but not only. The SAFE instrument, which is a temporary financial mechanism established in response to the current security crisis, is a concrete step that EU makes forward with determination to protect its citizens. This is a very good opportunity for Romania to take on its role as a responsible partner, which invests in its own capacities and contributes thus to the joint European effort," said Nicusor Dan.

According to the president, "it is essential, in the current context, that Europe takes care of itself through solidarity and intelligent investments to guarantee its own security, stability and prosperity".

On Thursday evening, the Romanian Government also hailed the approval by the European Commission of Romania's application for funding under SAFE.

"The European Commission approved Romania's national defence projects, worth more than 16 billion euros, through the SAFE mechanism. Starting this year's spring, after signing the agreement, Romania will be able to access this long-term loan, with low interest rates. Among the projects to be covered by this money will be the Moldova motorway, with its two segments: Pascani-Suceava-Siret and Pascani-Iasi-Ungheni," PM Ilie Bolojan said on Thursday.
