The preliminary handover of the first two Coradia Stream interregional electric multiple units (RE-IR) assigned to private operator InterRegional Calatori took place on Tuesday at the Alstom Depot, the Romanian Railway Reform Authority (ARF) announced on Facebook.

The units, TS14 and TS15, were taken over by representatives of ARF, Alstom and EGIS. During the visit, the Factory Acceptance Test (FAT) for unit TS15 was also completed, covering visual inspections and verification of technical documentation, ARF said.

These are the first trains from the batch of 13 units allocated to InterRegional Calatori under Romania's second competitively awarded public service contract (CSP-L2). The full series of 37 RE-IR trains is being delivered by Alstom under Contract RUIC 257/2022, aimed at modernising long-distance passenger rail services.

ARF noted that ownership transfer for TS14 and TS15 will take place after endurance tests are completed and the commissioning report is signed.

The trains are expected to operate on the following routes: Bucharest North - Brasov - Cluj-Napoca; Bucharest North - Brasov; Brasov - Deda - Cluj-Napoca; Cluj-Napoca - Deva - Timisoara North.

The project is part of a phased investment program managed by the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure, with funding from the 2014 - 2020 Large Infrastructure Operational Program (POIM) and the 2021 - 2027 Transport Program (PT). Its main objective is to improve national connectivity, reduce travel times and raise the overall quality of public rail services.

The total value of the project is RON 1.709 billion, including RON 1.214 billion in non-repayable EU funds, RON 214 million from the beneficiary's budget, and RON 281 million in non-eligible costs, VAT included.
