Romania's Prime Minister Viorica Dancila on Tuesday had a meeting with European Commission Vice-President Frans Timmermans on a visit to Strasbourg where she underscored a need for close co-ordination between Romania and the European Commission during the Romanian presidency of the EU Council, expressing a wish fort the debate in the European Parliament on Wednesday to be reasoning-based and constructive.
According to a government press statement, the discussions were conducted in a "constructive atmosphere" and addressed European affairs as well as current debates within the European Parliament.
"In this context, Prime Minister Viorica Dancila reiterated Romania's intention to act in order to promote the European interest and to ensure a successful tenure that highlights the importance of unity and the avoidance of divisions at European level. She expressed a wish for the European Parliament's tomorrow's debate to be both reasoning-based and constructive."
She reiterated support for the legislative priorities that the European Commission has recently unveiled.
"She welcomed the dialogue with the European Commission and emphasised the need for close coordination between Romania and the European Commission during the Romania's presidency of the Council of the European Union to the interest of all in order to strengthen the European project."
During the meeting "aspects regarding the amendments to the Romanian justice legislation, the secret protocols between the intelligence services and the various judicial bodies in Romania were also approached."
"Regarding the developments in the Co-operation and Verification Mechanism, issues related to the reviews included in the reports were discussed, with the prime minister pointing out that they do not fully reflect the reality on the ground. She reiterated openness to continue the consultations with the Venice Commission."
Also attending the meeting were ministers Rovana Plumb and Tudorel Toader, as well as MEP Dan Nica.
