At the end of May, the Romanian Customs Authority commissioned a new X-ray scanning system for small vehicles at the Halmeu Border Customs Office, the second largest customs office on the border with Ukraine, after Siret, the authority announced in a press release.
According to the source, this system is part of a broader effort to modernise customs infrastructure, with a total of eight X-ray scanning systems for passenger vehicles and cargo currently operational.
'By using this scanning system, along with other portable control equipment at the Halmeu Border Customs Office, the Romanian Customs Authority contributes to: significantly enhancing security at the external border of the European Union, by effectively preventing and detecting illicit transport and customs and/or fiscal fraud attempts; reducing waiting times at the border and improving the efficiency of customs controls through the use of advanced scanning technology; improving coordination of control activities through real-time image monitoring and analysis, as the scanning equipment is integrated into the National Customs Imaging Analysis Centre; enhancing customs services by optimising the interventions of operational control teams at the border and throughout the country, in order to protect the financial interests of both Romania and the European Union,' the press release reads.
The equipment is part of the project "Improving the Efficiency of the Romanian Customs Authority's Control Activity", valued at EUR 17,183,300, co-financed by the European Union through the Customs Control Equipment Instrument (CCEI).
