Sixteen of Romania's 33 MEPs voted to refer the Mercosur agreement to the EU Court of Justice (CJEU), including ten Social Democrats, according to the official voting list posted on the EP website.
Dragos Benea, Gheorghe Carciu, Andi Cristea, Vasile Dincu, Gabriela Firea, Claudiu Manda, Stefan Musoiu, Victor Negrescu, Dan Nica and Mihai Tudose supported the referral.
They were joined by Nicolae Stefanuta of the Greens Group, European Conservatives and Reformists Group members Serban Dimitrie Sturdza, Claudiu Tarziu, Georgiana Teodorescu and Cristian Terhes, as well as by non-affiliated MEP Luis Lazarus. Diana Iovanovici Sosoaca abstained from voting.
Twelve Romanian MEPs voted against, including EPP members Rares Bogdan, Daniel Buda, Gheorghe Falca, Mircea Hava, Dan Motreanu, Siegried Muresan, Virgil Popescu, Adina Valean, Lorant Vincze and Iuliu Winkler, along with Renew Group lawmakers Eugen Tomac and Dan Barna.
In a separate resolution tabled by the Patriots for Europe Group, nine Social Democrats again voted in favor, with Vasile Dincu the only exception. Thirteen Romanian MEPs opposed the second motion, with Nicu Stefanuta switching sides to join those voting against. Diana Iovanovici Sosoaca abstained again.
The European Parliament adopted on Wednesday, by simple majority, the proposal to refer the Mercosur agreement to the CJEU to assess its compliance with EU treaties. In total, 334 MEPs voted in favour, 324 against and 11 abstained, out of 669 votes cast.
A second resolution seeking the same referral was rejected, with 225 votes in favour, 402 against and 13 abstentions.
