Justice Minister Radu Marinescu, says that he has decided to pick Cristina Chiriac for the position of Romania's attorney general given that she has a vast and high-level professional experience, doubled by a remarkable legal training and has demonstrated the ability to efficiently mobilise available resources.

According to the Justice Ministry, "when putting forth this proposal, the justice minister took into account, in essence, that she has a vast and high-level professional experience, doubled by a remarkable legal training, as well as real managerial skills. All this is demonstrated both by the activity carried out in a leading position within the National Anti-Corruption Directorate (DNA), and by the content of the project presented, the works submitted and the statements made before the interview commission."

Chiriac is said to also "display a special capacity to capitalise, including at the managerial level, on a he vast experience acquired within the Supreme Court and the Directorate for the Investigation of Organised Crime and Terror and DNA, by identifying and promoting the use of modern tools, of a technical nature, in criminal prosecution, correlated with a strategic approach designed to cancel the proceeds from the commission of corruption crimes and related offences."

Marinescu adds that Chiriac has attached "a special importance" to the management of knowledge and direct communication, demonstrating an ability to efficiently mobilise the available resources, prioritising human resources, as well as to strategically capitalise on the competitive advantages of the Supreme Court in order to promote this prosecutor's office to a new stage of development and institutional consolidation.

"The draft on the exercise of the specific powers by the attorney general as well as the interview held in front of the interview board, highlighted a clear vision on the role of the Public Prosecutor's Office, underlining the indestructible link between the quality of the act of justice and the quality of institutional management. The prosecutor showed that the role of the management is not limited to the formal fulfilment of the coordination attributions, but implies taking up active leadership, capable of setting clear objectives, defining operational priorities and securing a consistent implementation of institutional policies at all hierarchical levels."

Moreover, the minister says that prosecutor Chiriac shows "a special concern" for ensuring the operational independence of prosecutors, considered "a fundamental pillar" of the rule of law and an essential condition for maintaining trust in the Public Prosecution Service.

"She supports the active role of the institution in the debates on the legislative framework regarding the status of prosecutors and their independence, as well as the promotion of an organisational culture based on ethics, integrity and professional responsibility, showing that the role of prosecutors with management positions in the management of integrity risks must be carried out in a way that does not affect the independence of subordinate prosecutors."

Also competing for the same position was military prosecutor with the Military Prosecutor's Office at the Bucharest Military Tribunal.

Picked for the position of deputy attorney general was current head of the DNA Marius Voineag.
