President of the Romanian Academy Ioan-Aurel Pop stated on Monday, at the festive event organized on the occasion of the 156th anniversary of the founding of the Academy, that the institution is not going through a "favourable period", owing to both the pandemic period and the energy crisis or crises related to political instability, Agerpres reports.
"For more than two years we have been fighting what could no longer be called an epidemic, as we generally know, but a pandemic, meaning we have been struggling in some kind of isolation and introversion without having found the key to communication and dialogue. We have been threatened by an energy crisis for some time now and we live with the obsession with overly high bills. Not to mention the crises of political instability. More recently, we have been taken aback at how Russia has waged an atrocious war against Ukraine, and we hear helplessly, day by day, the threatening sound of bombs and missiles getting closer to our borders. As we have known for a long time 'inter arma, silent musae - when the cannons are heard, the muses are silent', and this series of concomitant crises overwhelms us and often leaves us without suitable solutions to continue our activity. However, the Romanian Academy has adapted as much as it could, and continues to be the same institution of consecration of supreme intellectual values, of higher education of the nation and, especially, of researching the mysteries of this world for the advancement of the Romanian people, how it was once said in the 19th century," said Ioan-Aurel Pop, in the opening of the institution's anniversary event.
Ioan-Aurel Pop specified that the anniversary event of the Romanian Academy will include a series of films "evocative of the activity of the Academy and of some of the most relevant personalities from the past and present".
"Today we will honor our institution with a few films evoking the Academy's work and some of the most relevant personalities of the past and present that illustrate this world of erudition, research, and creation. this institution. We will see again figures dear to us who have honored and who honor this institution," said the academician.
The event was attended by personalities of science and culture from Romania and special guests.
