Minister of the Interior Catalin Predoiu met on Wednesday with Christian Hirst, First Assistant Secretary with Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, with both sides highlighting on the occasion their interest in deepening cooperation in fighting organized crime.
According to a release of the Ministry of the Interior, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Catalin Predoiu met on Wednesday with Dr. Christian Hirst of Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, at the request of the Australian side, agerpres reports.
The Australian official's visit to Bucharest is part of a broader European tour for in-depth strategic talks on issues of common interest, relevant in the current international security context, the Ministry noted.
"Ever since 2025, the very good bilateral dialogue between the authorities in Bucharest and Canberra has highlighted shared values and converging concerns regarding security and resilience, as well as mutual interest in developing cooperation on multiple levels," the Interior Ministry stated.
The meeting at the Ministry's headquarters facilitated an exchange of views on the current international security environment, on the state and prospects of recalibrating relations between states, given the unpredictability of the geopolitical landscape, as well as on managing hybrid threats and disinformation.
The discussions also provided an excellent opportunity to address the shared interest in strengthening cooperation against organised crime through effective data and information exchange, and in countering cyber threats through information sharing, best practices and operational experience.
Both sides underlined the consistency of bilateral dialogue in recent months and noted that the authorities in Canberra regard Romania as an important regional dialogue partner.
At the end of the meeting, the two officials agreed to maintain active contacts to deepen cooperation, including at technical level, in areas of common interest.
