The General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI), on the occasion of the International Migrants Day, marked annually on December 18, reported that 293,097 persons were recorded with a residence permit in Romania at the end of November this year, according to a press release of the institution sent to AGERPRES on Thursday.
"The International Migrants Day, marked every year on December 18, brings to the public's attention the contribution of migrants to the economic, social and cultural life of their countries of destination," reads the abovementioned press release.
Of the total number of people who are currently holding a residence permit on Romanian territory, 74.7% come from third countries, 24.4% from member states of the European Union and the European Economic Area, and 1% are citizens of the United Kingdom.
"Migration involves the movement of people outside their country of origin, temporarily or long-term, for reasons related to work, education, family or better living conditions. In this context, it is important to differentiate it from the situation of refugees, people who leave their country of origin as a result of conflicts, persecution or other major risks and who benefit from international protection, access to the asylum procedure and forms of assistance provided by national and European legislation," the same source shows.
According to the IGI, the institution manages the field of migration with a view to respecting the rights of foreigners and facilitating their integration into Romanian society. Through its territorial structures, information and cultural orientation services, counseling and support for access to education, the labour market, medical and social services are offered.
"On the occasion of the International Migrants Day, the IGI conveys its appreciation for the role that migrants play in the development of Romanian society and wishes them health, stability and success in the integration process," the press release also states.
