Interim Minister of Foreign Affairs Emil Hurezeanu said that so far there have been no requests for evacuation from Romanians residing in Northern Ireland, following the assault incident involving two Romanian citizens.
'There are two aspects that can be mentioned here, or two categories of information that can be provided. The Romanian Embassy to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland has been in communication with the authorities from the outset, ever since the crisis began. There are warnings from the British judicial authorities, advising the states whose nationals are involved in this prolonged conflict to refrain from excessive public communication, so that any potential support from those states is not exploited by the guilty parties themselves. We are aware of the situation, we are providing protection, and we are ensuring continuous communication and information-sharing between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on the ground, the Embassy in London, consulates, and the relevant community,' Hurezeanu explained on Wednesday during a press conference at the Victoria Palace.
In this context, the minister was asked whether there had been any evacuation requests from Romanians in Northern Ireland so far.
'These are pieces of information currently being gathered by our diplomatic offices. So far, there has been no evacuation,' Hurezeanu clarified.
He described the images of the protests in Northern Ireland as 'outrageous.'
'We are witnessing these episodes of unrest, which, of course, have various underlying causes - such as insufficient integration into the respective societies, expressions of anger that escalate to blatant discontent manifested through violations of the law. There are large foreign communities - especially in the United Kingdom - which complicate matters, as there are tensions not only between locals and foreigners, but also among different foreign communities. These situations can arise where law enforcement intervention becomes not only necessary but also harsh,' Hurezeanu said.
