The leader of the AUR senators, Petrisor Peiu, accused, on Tuesday, the Government and the Presidency of "hiding" from Romanians the "true" gravity of the situation related to the energy crisis at European level.
"As to the way the Government stuttered in the fuel crisis and the consequences of this issue, we strongly condemn the fact that the Government and the Presidency are hiding from Romanians the true gravity of the situation related to the energy crisis at European level. I am considering the fact that it is not explained and no data is given (...) and, at the same time, the consequences on agriculture, the chemical industry and the energy industry are not explained", declared Peiu in a press conference at the Palace of Parliament.
According to the AUR senator, "the Bolojan government has gone from zigzag to zigzag backwards".
"Ever since the meeting with OMV president Alfred Stern on March 16, 2026, Prime Minister Bolojan has been talking about reducing the share of biofuels in total fuels, in the volume of fuels. And we must say that the first time the government said that it would no longer be necessary to have biofuels in fuels, secondly, they then moved to an emergency ordinance that reduced the mandatory share of biofuels only for gasoline from 8% to 2%. (...) The Government's decision contradicts both Romania's international obligations and the 500 million euro scheme that the European Commission approved for us to support investments in biofuels. We must also say that no other member state of the European Union has reduced the share of biofuels in fuels. Romania is the only case," Petrisor Peiu explained.
He added that the letter sent by the European Commissioner for Energy to all EU member states recommends a set of measures to reduce the price at the pump, and reducing the share of biofuels does not appear among them, but, on the contrary, Dan Jorgensen recommends its increase.
In his opinion, the Government has taken "only contradictory measures that are in opposition to each other".
"Unlike the Bolojan Government, we propose a solution, namely a dynamic reduction of the VAT rate applicable to fuels, which does not affect the revenues on which the budget was projected. (...) The population is not prepared to face the energy shock that could arise from the overlap of the crisis generated by the war in Iran and the crisis generated by the new war tactics of the Ukrainian army. So, let's expect rising prices and expect a possible fuel shortage. It is, unfortunately, the government's tactic that was also used in the 2008 crisis, which was also used at the beginning of the COVID crisis, to hide from the population the true extent of the phenomena we are facing", concluded Petrisor Peiu.
