The Minister of Internal Affairs, Catalin Predoiu, sent a message on Tuesday on the Day of the General Inspectorate for Immigration (IGI), emphasizing that the IGI fulfills a series of essential functions for the accomplishment of the missions of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI) and for the Romanian state.

''These functions, which concern the entry and stay of foreigners in Romania, visa procedures, asylum, return, relocation procedures, Schengen codes and procedures, have a direct impact on maintaining control over public safety and national security, but also over some activities in the national economy, where entrepreneurs and companies registered in our country use foreign national employees,'' Predoiu declared.

He drew attention to the technological revolution, especially digitalization and artificial intelligence (AI).

''Please start an internal reflection process at the IGI level on what operations can be digitized or processed with artificial intelligence in the next three years. This operation of selecting and listing the procedures and operations that can be further digitized, in addition to what has already been done, and possibly processed with AI must be replicated in all MAI structures and arms, especially in the areas that process information and documents, so that, within a reasonable time, we have an integrated picture of what we can digitize more within MAI. (...) It is important to digitize and integrate AI into some bureaucratic procedures, because we need to increase the speed with which we process documents and information, because too much is still expected in some procedures by citizens and companies and because we cannot solve the staff shortage otherwise,'' said the minister.
