The Union of the Romanian Principalities represented not only the fulfilment of the legitimate aspirations of Romanians but also the beginning of modern diplomacy, Foreign Minister Oana Toiu said on Saturday.

'Today we celebrate 167 years since the Union of the Romanian Principalities. It is a landmark moment for the start of the modernisation of the Romanian state and the simultaneous affirmation of the identity of the united state and of its belonging to the European family of nations. Neither then nor now has Romania's sovereignty been weakened by strengthening ties with the nations of the world, but rather strengthened and protected by it. Unity, solidarity and national cohesion benefited then from the meeting between a country's ideals and expectations and the action of the political class, because statesmen understood that there was something stronger than competition among themselves: the direction of the country and its place in the world. The Union of the Romanian Principalities represented not only the fulfilment of the legitimate aspirations of Romanians but also the beginning of modern diplomacy, whose institutional core took shape immediately after 1859, contributing decisively to Romania's affirmation on the international stage,' Oana Toiu said in a message marking the Day of the Union of the Romanian Principalities.

She brought to mind, in a world marked by multiple challenges, the contribution of our predecessors as proof of continuity.

'The commitment of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to continue to act with professionalism, consistency and responsibility for the benefit and safety of Romanian citizens is how we honour the spirit of the Union. A united Romania anchored in the world of those who share similar values of freedom, democracy and the rule of law is the legacy of the will of those who made possible the historic act of 24 January 1859. The Union of the Romanian Principalities laid the foundations of the modern Romanian state and opened the way to social, cultural and administrative reforms and people were able to see their will reflected in political action and to build a better future at home more easily. In these times, the word ‘union' also evokes the wisdom and the strength of common action of those who bear the responsibility of representing the country and it is as relevant today as it has always been,' the Foreign Minister added.
