Foreign Affairs Minister Oana Toiu had a meeting on Tuesday with the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities Christophe Kamp, on the occasion of the visit the Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe official is paying to Romania between 16 and 18 February.
According to a press release issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the visit falls within the framework of the constant dialogue Romania maintains with the institution of the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities. The meeting provided the opportunity for an in-depth exchange of views on issues related to the protection and promotion of the rights of persons belonging to national minorities, as well as on the role of the autonomous institution of the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities in safeguarding these rights.
"Minister Oana Toiu underlined the importance Romania attaches to the protection of the rights of persons belonging to national minorities in our country, the Romanian model regarding the representation of national minorities having established itself as a model studied by other countries as well. The OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities appreciated the solid national legislative framework, which pays special attention to the representation of national minorities," the quoted source says.
The discussions between the two officials also focused on the observance of the rights of persons belonging to the Romanian minority and on mechanisms to combat the rise in hate-inciting speech.
The exchange of views also covered developments in the Western Balkans, the Foreign Ministry press release further mentions.
The High Commissioner on National Minorities is an autonomous OSCE institution created in 1992 to address issues concerning national minorities. Since the establishment of the institution, the HCNM has visited Romania on numerous occasions, most recently in June 2018. Christophe Kamp took up his mandate as OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities in December 2024.
