EduMin David: I am convinced that students will be welcomed back in schools on September 8

Minister of Education and Research Daniel David on Tuesday voiced his conviction that students will be welcomed back in schools on September 8 and that they will enter the classrooms, but, probably, in some schools there will be different forms of 'boycott' as part of the strikes announced by the trade unions.

"My message to parents, students and teachers is that beyond the controversies that inevitably exist at this moment in our field, our feeling mad at each other, we all know that in the end the interest of the children matters. I am convinced that students will be welcomed and waited for in schools. (...) The children will be welcomed back in schools and I am convinced that they will enter the classroom, but, after that, in various schools there will probably be different forms of boycott. Or there will be no boycott at all. (...) I am convinced that the children who go to school will be welcomed in schools," the minister told Antena 3 CNN private broadcaster, agerpres reports.

He said that each principal will determine what festivity to hold on September 8 or if the children will enter the classroom directly.

David will send a memo to the school principals so that they can notify the parents what happens with the beginning of the school year.

"I think that this responsibility [to notify the parents] lies first of all with the principals. (...) I am calling on all principals to do this and we will also send a memo to this effect - parents should know what to do on the 8th. I think, this is my hope, that regardless of the forms of protest, the children will go to school, they will be welcomed back into the classroom. And after that [teachers] can express themselves in various schools, different classes, various forms of protest. (...) The link and the message must come from the school principal, who will say very clearly what is happening in the respective school, it is there that the parents should get the information. I doubt that there will be schools that will reject the presence of children."

On Monday, teachers' unions said that on September 8 they will boycott the beginning of the school year, picket the headquarters of the Executive and stage a protest march to the Cotroceni Presidential Palace.

They asked pupils, parents and students not to blame them, as the teachers' protest is one for "stopping the abusive measures of the government."

"The Federation of Free Trade Unions in Education, the Federation of Trade Unions in Education Spiru Haret and the National Trade Union Federation Alma Mater, as a sign of their revolt against the provisions of Law 141/2025 regarding the educational system that causes an unprecedented crisis in education in the last 35 years, organises on September 8, 2025 the picketing of the headquarters of the Romanian Government, followed by a protest march to the Cotroceni Palace," the trade unionists reported in a press release.

The trade unionists say their actions aim to draw attention to the obligation to solve the problems faced by the staff in pre-university and higher education, as well as to the fact that the education employees reject the political measures adopted by the government to narrow the government deficit, with negative effects on the education system - but, first of all, on the beneficiaries of education.
