The standard retirement age for military personnel is currently, according to the law, 60 years old, PSD deputy Mihai Fifor said on Tuesday, arguing that the "airing" in public area of the idea that they allegedly retire at 48 years old is not "an innocent confusion", but an "abject manipulative maneuver".
"The idea in the public area that servicemen 'retire at 48' is not an innocent confusion or an error of interpretation. It is an abject manipulation maneuver, meant to induce in society the false perception that servicemen are a privileged category favored by the state. The legal reality, however, is completely different. According to Law no. 223/2015 on state military pensions, amended by Law no. 282/2023 (in force from January 1, 2024), the legal framework is clear and unequivocal. The standard retirement age for servicemen is currently 60 years old. This is the legal age applicable today to all military personnel who request full-service pension," Fifor wrote on Facebook.
He added that, through the amendments adopted in 2023, the legislator explicitly established a schedule for the progressive increase of the standard age up to 65 years, as follows: 2031 - 61 years, 2032 - 62 years, 2033 - 63 years, 2034 - 64 years, 2035 - 65 years.
"The military pension for age limit is not granted automatically. It is cumulatively conditioned by a minimum of 25 years of effective seniority, of which at least 15 years in military service. Without fulfilling these conditions, the right to a pension does not exist. Where does the myth of 'retirement at 48 years' come from? Isolated cases of early retirement are strictly regulated by law and relate to: loss of work capacity, restructuring, transfers to the reserve for reasons not attributable to the military. These situations do not represent the rule, do not define the system and cannot be honestly presented as general public policy. Therefore, stating that 'military personnel retire at 48 years' is a propaganda lie deliberately used to antagonize society and to discredit a professional category that operates under a regime of incompatibilities, restrictions of rights and permanent risks", explained Mihai Fifor.
The social democrat stressed that the law is clear - soldiers retire today at 60 years old, the age will increase to 65 years old, and the pension is granted only after a minimum of 25 years of service and "any other narrative is manipulation".
