The Craiova International Airport is the largest airport ever built by a regional authority in Romania, being designed to become like a development hub for the Oltenia region, with an aeronautical park and an industrial park attached to it, to serve the entire southern part of the country, the president of the Dolj County Council, Cosmin Vasile, stated on the occasion of the inauguration of the new airport terminal, on Thursday.
"The expansion and modernisation of the Craiova International Airport is the most important investment project in the entire Oltenia. (...) This is an important day for all those who believe in the power of large projects and in the chance to turn dreams into reality," said Cosmin Vasile.
The president of the Dolj County Council also specified that the investment in the construction of the new terminal of the Craiova Airport was worth 100 million euros.
"Looking at the map, we see a simple and powerful truth: within a radius of 250 kilometres there is no other airport. Anyone who says that this investment would not have been opportune forgets one essential thing: Oltenia deserves development, Dolj deserves to be connected to the world, and the people of this region deserve equal opportunities," Cosmin Vasile also stated.
According to the same source, the new terminal is a regional project, as all administrations in Oltenia benefit from the added value that this airport brings, but also a gateway to Europe for many communities in Bulgaria and Serbia.
The project was financed via the Large Infrastructure Operational Programme (POIM) 2014-2020, Priority Axis 2 - sustainable multimodal transport, with a total value of over 100 million euros, of which a substantial part comes from European funds, supplemented by the state budget, the Dolj County Council and the contribution of the Craiova International Airport.
The inauguration event brought together central and local officials, public figures, aviation specialists, institutional partners.
