Building strong teams is difficult if people resort to mudslinging, PM says over ministerial motion

Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan said on Wednesday that the Social Democratic Party's (PSD) support for the simple motion against Environment Minister Diana Buzoianu was not beneficial for the governing coalition.

Speaking on radio broadcaster Digi FM, he said it was difficult to build strong teams when political actors engage in personal attacks against one another.

"What happened the other day in the Senate was not a good thing. On the one hand, it represented a breach of the coalition agreement. On the other, if you look at what happened in the chamber, when the minister took the floor and responded to the PSD, those applauding most enthusiastically were members of the Opposition. When PSD colleagues went to the podium to criticise the minister, once again it was the Opposition who applauded most. From a human perspective, it is difficult to build strong teams for tomorrow if today people resort to mudslinging and lower the level of criticism to a point that does not foster trust,: the prime minister explained.

According to Bolojan, none of the parties in government has anything to gain from such disputes, as the public expects results from the Government.

"Throughout this period, I have tried to take a step back, despite the number of criticisms directed at me. We have two options: to reset this coalition, reassess what has worked and what has not, and move forward - an option I consider feasible if we act responsibly. The second option is to continue in this manner: today a motion against one minister, tomorrow another motion against a different minister, the day after one party summons another party's minister to Parliament. Insults emerge, criticism escalates, and the deterioration of relations deepens," Bolojan said.

He warned that unless relations are reset, the situation "will not end well", stressing that it is only a matter of time before conflicts escalate and matters take a negative turn.

"This would be bad, first and foremost, for Romania, and it would also be bad for these parties. However, this does not depend solely on me. I have done everything possible, both humanly and politically, to avoid conflict during this period. I have absorbed criticism, sometimes undeserved, on an almost daily basis. But when you are part of such a coalition, with four parties, even when criticised you must be mindful of the tone of your response, otherwise you only set in motion a snowball that grows and worsens," the prime minister added.

Bolojan noted that cooperation within the Executive itself is "much better", as discussions are largely technical in nature. In general, he said, the main "disruptions" come from outside the Government, from the political arena.

"The coalition can certainly function better, and in these days, as we close 2025 and prepare for 2026, its effectiveness will be validated by what we deliver. I hope we will demonstrate that we can function," Prime Minister Bolojan concluded.
