Belgian tennis player Elise Mertens will be Romania's Simona Halep's adversary, the en titre and current world champion, in the second round of the WTA Mutua Madrid Open, featuring prizes amounting to 6,68 million euro.
Halep (26 years old), reigning champion in Madrid for the last two years, prevailed on Sunday over Russian player Ekaterina Makarova, 6-1, 6-0, after only 51 minutes, while Elise Mertens (22 years old, WTA's 16th), defeated her compatriot Alison Van Uytvanck, 6-4, 6-4. Saturday, Mertens won the Rabat title, after 6-2, 7-6 (4) against Australian Ajla Tomljanovic.
For the first time, Halep and Martens will be opponents.
Sara Sorrbies Tormo (Spain) made a big splash on Sunday, when she defeated American player Madison Keys, 13th seeded, 7-5, 6-2.
