The lawmakers of the Alliance for the Unity of Romanians (AUR) will submit to the Senate on Wednesday three simple motions on Defense, Education and the government's approach to the Mercosur Agreement, after already collecting the necessary signatures, AUR Senate floor leader Petrisor Peiu announced on Monday.

"We will submit to the Senate, together with the other opposition MPs from the Peace - Romania First Group, three simple motions: one regarding the government's attitude on the Mercosur issue, another concerning developments at the Ministry of Defense and the absolutely strange statements of the new Defense minister, and a third addressing the extremely serious situation at the Education Ministry, where we still do not have a new minister, only an interim one who appears sporadically and commutes from Oradea. All three motions will be submitted on Wednesday in the Senate plenary, together with our colleagues from the Peace - Romania First Group," Peiu said at a press conference at Parliament.

He reiterated that AUR will also file a motion of censure if the government chooses to pledge responsibility for the administrative reform.

"If there is another package - on administrative reform - there is a draft on the Ministry of Development's website that we can comment on. We will submit a censure motion if the government assumes responsibility for that project, including because it would be the eighth time, if I am not mistaken, that it resorts to this procedure in eight months of governing," the senator said.

Asked about a possible suspension of the head of the state, Peiu argued that "there is no point in initiating an action you know in advance no one in the government will support".

"This is not a censure motion, where we debate a public policy or the government's performance. This is a decision with major consequences for the functioning of the Romanian state, and we know that without the votes of Social Democratic lawmakers, who otherwise claim to be dissatisfied with the president's activity, we cannot move forward. We would not obtain the suspension. And as you know, the suspension is only the first stage, which should be followed by a referendum," he explained.
