The leader of the USR (Save Romania Union) deputies, Ionut Mosteanu, emphasizes that, in a democracy, elections "are decided by vote, not at the green table," and the Constitutional Court should reject the requests to cancel the results of the first round of the presidential election.
The clarifications come in the context in which the CCR (the Constitutional Court of Romania) is set to debate on Thursday, as of 11.00 am, the requests of Cristian Terhes and Sebastian Constantin Popescu, candidates in the presidential election, to cancel the results of the first round of voting.
"This was an election with results that surprised many, including us. But there is no doubt that election day was the most fair in recent years - all the ballots in the ballot boxes represented the option of the Romanians. Whether we like the result or not, this is how democracy works. The vote was taken, it was counted correctly, no one contested Sunday's electoral process. Yes, there remains a discussion about the campaign - how certain electoral competitors financed themselves and how they used social platforms. Here we had laws and institutions that had the leverage to intervene during the campaign," writes Mosteanu on Facebook.
He also mentioned that the campaign for the second round of the election should start on Friday and that postponing the decision after the parliamentary elections "will show a clear intention to cancel" the elections, which would represent "an unprecedented attack" on the rule of law.
"Every day of delay puts our future at risk! The CCR must reject the complaints. Postponing the decision after the parliamentary election under various pretexts (documents from the BEC, etc.) will show a clear intention to cancel the elections, an unprecedented attack on the rule of law. The end does not justify the means and any injustice returns tenfold against the system that uses the power it temporarily has discretionarily. We will defeat extremism at the polls on December 1 in the parliamentary election and on December 8 in the second round of the presidential election! There are more Romanians who want us to remain in Europe than those who are manipulated into thinking that Russia is also an alternative," adds Mosteanu.
