The president of the Force of Right party, Ludovic Orban, considers it "scandalous" that for two and a half years the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) has been operating without a legitimate leadership, telling President Nicusor Dan to stop hesitating, stop waiting for a consensus in the coalition and to nominate a candidate to propose to Parliament.

Orban believes that the responsibility lies strictly with the President, who is not exercising his constitutional and legal powers if he does not nominate anyone for this position.

"For two and a half years, the SRI has been operating outside the law. Since July 3, 2023, the date Eduard Helwig resigned, the SRI has not had a director appointed in accordance with the provisions of the law and is led by a first deputy appointed by Iohannis in 2017. In a period in which threats to national security have diversified and amplified, it is scandalous that the main intelligence service, which must watch over our national security, is left in the lurch, without a legitimate leadership to ensure its functioning at full capacity and in accordance with the new priorities stemming from the significant developments of recent times," Orban wrote on Facebook on Friday.

According to him, the fact that Iohannis, at the end of his term and "completely disengaged from the responsibilities of the presidential office", did not appoint a new director, according to legal provisions, "was not a big surprise".

Orban added that for President Nicusor Dan, appointing a new director was not a priority either.

The leader of the Force of Right party has told the president to nominate a candidate for the leadership of the SRI without waiting for a consensus from the coalition.

"I draw the attention of the President that it is one thing to nominate a candidate who is rejected by Parliament, it is another to nominate no one. In the first case, the responsibility belongs to the party or parties that refuse to vote for a proposal by the President. In the second situation, the responsibility lies strictly with the President, who does not exercise his constitutional and legal powers. Romania needs a legally run SRI, run by a new team, in which the elected President has confidence and which will apply the strategy of the new team from Cotroceni. Don't hesitate any longer, Mr. President! Don't wait for a consensus from the coalition! Nominate a serious, well-prepared candidate, of unquestionable morality, attached to democratic values and our membership in the Euro-Atlantic space, and go with the proposal to Parliament!", Ludovic Orban also wrote.
