The Government of the United States of America does not comment on the opinions or conclusions of individuals, American citizens, said spokesman of the US Embassy in Bucharest Donald L. Caroll in connection with Rudolph Giuliani's recent letter to President Klaus Iohannis and the Speakers of the two Chambers of Parliament.
We suggest that you contact Mr. Giuliani for comments on the statements presented as his, the diplomatic mission to Bucharest said in a reply to AGERPRES.
The spokesman of the US Embassy further referenced the June 28 statement of the US Embassy in Bucharest and of Romania's major European partners, underscoring in this context that until recently "Romania has shown considerable progress in combatting corruption and building effective rule of law," and therefore "encouraging Romanians to continue on this path."
Citing further from the statement, the response of the US Embassy notes that ''we are following closely the changes to the criminal codes and remain concerned that several are likely to impede international law enforcement cooperation and negatively impact the fight against various crimes."
The experts' contribution to sorting out this issue is also highlighted.
"We encourage all parties involved to reconsider feedback provided by domestic legal experts such as the Superior Council of Magistracy, and to seek support from international legal experts such as the Group of States Against Corruption and the Venice Commission," the response signed by the spokesperson of the US Embassy also reads.
