The head of the Department for Emergency Situations (DSU), Raed Arafat, informed, on Monday, after a videoconference with prefectures and the Emergency Situations Committees, that 36 counties are affected by bad weather, and the situation may change depending on the meteorologists' warnings.
"There are four counties under code orange - Caras-Severin, Gorj, Hunedoara and Mehedinti - and 32 counties under code yellow. (...) These codes are to be updated in the coming period, we do not foresee a significant worsening, but the situation is dynamic and if necessary, they will be updated", Arafat said in a press conference at the Interior Ministry (MAI) headquarters, after discussions with prefectures.
He added that the Minister of Internal Affairs, Catalin Predoiu, requested that the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations (IGSU) ensure "all the force maneuvers that are necessary at the request of the affected counties and will continue activating the operational groups where provided for in the procedure, including the operational group at the DSU and IGSU level".
Arafat said that in the first five days of the year no very serious situations were recorded, although in some counties there were problems with the supply of electricity, and in some counties, with the distribution of water (Alba and Hunedoara).
"In terms of electricity, we reached over 90,000 users without power at one point, but the figure is significantly decreasing. Measures have been taken - sending high-capacity generators from neighboring emergency inspectorates, in addition to the generators made available by the electricity company that supplies electricity to the area. Not all areas with interrupted power could be connected to generators for technical reasons," Arafat said.
He mentioned that several RO-ALERT text messages were sent - for counties that are under code orange, but also for "nowcasting" or for specific situations, but at this moment the situation is under control and no special interventions are necessary.
The DSU chief recommended that citizens drive with great care, as the road surfaces may be covered with snow or ice.
"For those who want to go on the road, check all the conditions of the roads you want to go on, there are websites, applications where you can check the traffic conditions and make sure that the cars are prepared for the respective roads - winter tires and everything you need for a road that takes place in winter conditions," Arafat also said.
He also recommended that tourists who are in the mountainous areas drive with care, as there are risks of avalanches and of remaining stuck if they leave on certain mountain roads and to get information from the Mountain Rescue before setting off on a mountain route.
