PSD chairman Sorin Grindeanu declared, in the context of the protests organized by farmers in Brussels, that everything starts from the future EU-Mercosur free trade agreement, an initiative that is not very well explained and which could give rise to new street protests.

Thousands of European farmers gathered in Brussels on Thursday for a protest against the free trade agreement between the EU and the states of the South American bloc Mercosur, a protest that degenerated into confrontations with police and acts of vandalism.

"I think everything starts from this future treaty between the European Union and Mercosur. It's a matter that doesn't seem to be very well explained by the commission at the moment. It's not known what impact it will have on European farmers, because, as you well know here, there are a lot of rules that farmers have to comply with," said Sorin Grindeanu on Friday, on the occasion of the inauguration of former Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu as president of the Buzau County Council.

The PSD leader also emphasized that the farmers' concerns are justified, in the absence of clear explanations from the European Commission.

"I don't know if the same rules are valid elsewhere and, obviously, when these regulations don't exist, things are cheaper coming from elsewhere. That's why I think the European Commission must explain very well what the pluses are, what the things are or what the future of agriculture will look like once this treaty is signed, because these concerns of farmers are absolutely justified. If it's not explained and people don't know what to expect, obviously they will react and they won't react only in Brussels, they will probably react in all the countries of the European Union," the PSD leader emphasized.
