In Timisoara, at 12:00 on Saturday, the 'sirens of freedom' will sound, marking 36 years since the declaration of the first city free from communism in the country, when workers from all industrial platforms went on general strike and occupied Opera Square, which they did not leave until Ceausescu fled.
For Timisoara, the month of December represents an essential landmark of collective memory, being the period when the hero-martyrs of the December 1989 Revolution are commemorated, as well as the moment when the city became the first free city from communism in Romania, assuming a decisive role in triggering the liberation of the entire country, a press release from the Timisoara City Hall said on Friday.
It is a symbolic moment that honours the courage of those who fought for freedom and dignity.
Timisoara City Hall invites all citizens to take part in this moment of reflection and tribute, through which we honour and reaffirm the values for which people fought: freedom, solidarity and respect for human rights.
From 18:00, Rock for Revolution concert will take place in Opera or Victoriei Square, an event that has been on the City Hall's agenda since 2010 and which hosts local, national and international rock bands.
This year, the Saturday concert on 20 December brings Vita de Vie and Sarmalele Reci to Timisoara, preceded by the local band Sonatic.
