The municipality of Sighetu Marmatiei, a town located in the immediate vicinity of the Romanian-Ukrainian border, will have its first ring road, an investment estimated at over 40 million euro.

'We are continuing major infrastructure investments and the Sighetu Marmatiei ring road is also entering a final stage. We are talking about a project of almost 5 km, which will connect DN 18 to the new road bridge (between Romania and Ukraine - ed. note) over the Tisa. (...) The value of the project is approximately 40 million euro, an essential investment for easing traffic and developing the area,' president of the Maramures County Council Gabriel Zetea, said in a Facebook post on Monday.

The head of the County Council showed that the public procurement procedure will be launched in April and that works on the new ring road could begin at the latest next year.

In this context, the president of the Maramures County Council told AGERPRES on Monday that the new ring road of Sighetu Marmatiei will allow easier access to the new border crossing point and customs checkpoint to be opened at the new road bridge crossing the Tisa River.

'The town has not had a ring road, and road traffic has increased significantly since the outbreak of the war in Ukraine. (...) In practice, the new road bridge, currently at an advanced stage of construction, will allow easier access to the neighbouring country, but it will also reconfigure traffic throughout the town. The ring road thus becomes extremely necessary in this case and we must prepare in advance. Once the new road bridge between Romania and Ukraine is opened, the entire traffic layout in Sighetu Marmatiei will be reorganised and the investment in the ring road will shift a significant share of traffic there,' Gabriel Zetea also said.

He further mentioned that the opening of the new road bridge over the Tisa River between Romania and Ukraine will keep the current crossing point between the two countries operational, which is located quite close to the central area of Sighetu Marmatiei.

'The current wooden and metal bridge will remain open to traffic even after the new road bridge is opened, though probably operating at reduced capacity. What is certain is that Maramures will have two road access routes to Ukraine, in addition to a railway connection,' Gabriel Zetea added.

Rail freight traffic between Ukraine and Romania on the broad-gauge line is ensured by that country's railways, but passenger rail traffic is temporarily suspended. Rail access to Maramures from Ukraine is operated through the localities of Valea Viseului and Campulung la Tisa.
