Several hundred people are protesting on Wednesday evening in front of the headquarters of the Superior Council of Magistracy (CSM) in Bucharest, following the disclosures in the Recorder documentary.

The protesters displayed banners with messages such as: "Corruption suffocates the magistracy", "How long do we struggle to be a European state", "Change comes through involvement", "How do you want to acquit?".

They also shouted "Justice, not mafia", "We want justice, not immunity", "Down with Predoiu" [former Minister of Justice, currently at the helm of the Ministry of Internal Affairs] and "Integrity, not complicity".

At the same time, they are demanding the resignation of the President of the High Court of Cassation and Justice, Lia Savonea, and the Minister of Justice, Radu Marinescu.

The call for a "Protest for the Independence of the Judiciary" was announced on Wednesday on Facebook, after Recorder released a documentary exposing several irregularities in the judicial system.

"The independence of the judiciary is at risk, with negative consequences for Romanian democracy. The legislation favors abuses and honest judges are intimidated! We demand, among other things, a change in the legislation to prevent numerous abuses (such as eliminating the statute of limitations for acts of corruption or eliminating the possibility for magistrates to choose the prosecutors who investigate them). Moreover, it is important to show our support for this cause in order to offer courage to the magistrates in the country, who are mostly honest, but who, out of fear of the corrupt administration, are silenced", is the message posted on the Facebook page "Protest for the independence of the judiciary".
