Presidential candidate of the Romania Forward electoral alliance Crin Antonescu says that he would like Calin Georgescu back in the battle for the state's top job, considering him "a strong candidate".
"Unless, God forbid, something goes amiss and he flagrantly breaks the law - tensions are running increasingly higher - I would like him to be in the competition, and I think that even with him in the race, no one knows the winner. I am on the conservative side, I would like Mr. Georgescu to remain where we know him, that is in the electoral campaign. What happens next when Mr. Georgescu registers his bid, what happens in the prosecutor's offices and courts is not my business. (...) Obviously if he runs, Mr. Georgescu would make a strong candidate, after all he got two million votes or thereabouts," Crin Antonescu told a press conference organized on Thursday in Buzau, with PSD and PNL leaders also attending.
Regarding his opponents in the presidential election, Antonescu stressed that he respects them all and that any one could be quite a challenge.
"What I want, as a Bucharest resident is for Mr. Nicusor Dan to prove himself a good mayor at least in his second term, he was given a referendum after all, the people of Bucharest entrusted him with power and all the money, the referendum somehow cast sector mayors as some kind of cheerleaders next to Mr. Nicusor Dan. I would like him to get down to business and act like a good mayor. As a presidential candidate, he certainly is an opponent, a counter-candidate and I give him all due respect, but you should know that those opinion polls are drivel and as a mathematician he is well aware of that. (...) Victor Ponta must first officially throw his hat in the ring, and when he does so, we will also discuss him. Any candidate is inconvenient for the others because each of them skims votes off the common pool, I respect everyone as a president right off the bat," Antonescu specified.
He also explained that as a voter he would expect the presidential candidates to present a consistent foreign policy program.
"I don't do magic, I can't promise Romanians that we will come to the conclusion that Latin is derived from Romanian, I can't prescribe them safe recipes. (...) If I were a voter, this is what I'd expect from these candidates, to insist on foreign policy issues. The bet is, so to speak, that half plus one of the Romanian voters who show up to the polls are rational. I'm not saying that the others are irrational, but there are moments of mental darkness or confusion, moments of great emotion, there's nothing pejorative in that, it happens to everyone and it happens to me too, but when I'm president I won't be allowed to be scatterbrained. That's what I call irrational, I'm not saying that those people aren't normal, they're actually highly intelligent. (...) The first element to deal with for the EU states will be that - beyond the bilateral dialogue with the Americans - they keep their formula of unity, of coherence. We must talk about Europe's return to competitiveness policies, (...) and thirdly, the EU's place and way of organizing within NATO, additional budgets, organizing joint defense structures," Antonescu said.
Crin Antonescu appeared on Thursday in Buzau as a speaker, alongside Minister of Environment, Waters and Forestry Mircea Fechet, at the conference "Integrated Waste Management Systems in Romania - From theory to functionality".
