Romania's usable natural gas production was standing at 3.151 million tonnes of oil equivalent (toe) in the first five months of 2025, down 54,500 toe or 1.7%, year-on-year, according to data with the National Institute of Statistics (INS).
On the other hand, between January and May 2025, natural gas imports increased by 61% (plus 403,700 toe) year-on-year, up to 1.066 million toe.
According to estimates of Romania's National Economic Strategy and Prediction Board (CNSP), the country's natural gas production is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 1.7% by 2027. Thus, in the latest Energy Balance Forecast, a natural gas production of 7.79 million toe (plus 1.5%) was estimated for 2025, a natural gas production of 7.907 million toe (plus 1.5%) for 2026 and a natural gas production of 8.176 million toe (plus 3.4%) for 2027.
As for imports, a downward trend is expected, with a more pronounced pace by 2027 (minus 6%), in line with the advance of production, following the commissioning of new capacities, and also taking into account keeping up transit to foreign markets.
CNSP is expecting natural gas imports of 2.211 million toe (-7.6%) in 2025, 2.150 million toe (-2.7%) in 2026, and 2.022 million toe (-6%) in 2027.
