Romania's boys' junior team, the defending champions, advanced to the final at the European Youth Table Tennis Championships in Ostrava, Czechia, according to the Romanian Table Tennis Federation
The Romanian team defeated the main favorite, France, 3-0 in the quarterfinals. Iulian Chiritadefeated Flavio Mourier 3-0 (11-8, 11-5, 11-6), Dragos Bujor defeated Nathan Pilard 3-2 (6-11, 11-6, 3-11, 11-4, 11-6), and Robert Istrate beat Nathan Lam 3-2 (12-10, 11-6, 9-11, 8-11, 12-10), agerpres reports.
In the semifinals, Romania beat Slovakia 3-1. Scoring for the team were Iulian Chirita, 3-2 (10-12, 11-2, 11-8, 9-11, 11-5) against Samuel Palusek and 3-1 (11-0, 11-6, 7-11, 11-7) against Samuel Arpas. The other point was scored by Robert Istrate, after 3-2 (7-11, 4-11, 11-8, 13-11, 11-8) against Damian Floro. In another match, Dragos Bujor lost to Samuel Arpas 2-3 (11-7, 9-11, 8-11, 11-8, 7-11).
In the final, Romania will face Portugal.
In the girls' junior team competition, Romania lost to Spain 1-3 in the quarterfinals. The only point for the Romanians was scored by Bianca Mei-Rosu, 3-0 (11-1, 11-8, 11-2) against Maria Berzosa.
Alesia Sferlea lost to Camila Moscoso, 2-3 (11-2, 7-11, 11-7, 11-13, 8-11), Andreea Jifcu lost to Mariona Munne, 1-3 (11-5, 8-11, 8-11, 11-13), and Bianca Mei-Rosu lost to Camila Moscoso 1-3 (10-12, 11-6, 9-11, 4-11).
Romania then lost to Germany (2-3) in the match for the 5th-8th places. Bianca Mei-Rosu defeated Elisa Nguyen 3-0 (11-7, 11-9, 11-2) and Eireen Kalaitzidou 3-0 (11-6, 11-8, 11-2). Alesia Sferlea lost to Eireen Kalaitzidou 1-3 (4-11, 8-11, 11-6, 7-1), Andreea Baiasu lost to Lisa Wang, 0-3 (7-11, 3-11, 7-11), and Alesia Sferlea lost to Elisa Nguyen 0-3 (9-11, 3-11, 8-11).
In the match for the 7th-8th places, Romania will play Austria.
In the boys' cadet team competition Romania was defeated by Germany 3-1 in the quarterfinals. The only point of Romania was scored by Alexandru Pop, after 3-2 (11-9, 11-9, 5-11, 6-11, 11-7) over Lukas Wang.
David Toro lost to Jonas Rinderer 0-3 (3-11, 8-11, 3-11), Alexandru Pop also lost to Jonas Rinderer 1-3 (6-11, 11-9, 4-11, 7-11), and in doubles, David Toro and Alexandru Pop lost to Samuel Kuhl/Jonas Rinderer 0-3 (10-12, 3-11, 7-11).
Romania then defeated Spain 3-1 in the match for the 5th-8th places. David Toro beat Roger Quesada 3-2 (5-11, 11-9, 14-12, 8-11, 12-10), Andrei Tibirna also won against Roger Quesada 3-0 (11-7, 13-11, 12-10), and David Toro and Alexandru Pop won the doubles against Alexander Malov/Tianxiang Zou 3-2 (11-9, 8-11, 10-12, 11-8, 11-8). In another match, Andrei Titirna lost to Alexander Malov 1-3 (7-11, 5-11, 11-5, 8-11).
Romania will play France for the 5th-6th places.
In the quarterfinals of the girls' cadet team competition Romania lost to Italy 0-3.
Patricia Stoica lost to Manon Loth 1-3 (12-14, 11-8, 12-14, 6-11), Maya Madar also lost to Sofia Episcopo, 1-3 (17-19, 7-11, 11-6, 9-11), and the duo Kariss Serban/Patricia Stoica lost to Manon Loth/Goia Picu 0-3 (5-11, 11-13, 10-12).
Romania will play Poland for the 5th-6th places, after beating Portugal 3-1 in the match for the 5th-8th positions.
Patricia Stoica defeated Irina Silva 3-0 (12-10, 11-5, 11-8) and Leonor Gomes 3-1 (8-11, 14-12, 11-8, 11-7), and Patricia Stoica/Kariss Serban defeated Leonor Gomes/Irina Silva 3-2 (11-9, 13-15, 10-12, 11-6, 11-7). In another match, Maya Madar lost to Leonor Gomes 2-3 (11-3, 8-11, 6-11, 14-12, 10-12).
At the 2024 European Youth Table Tennis Championships, Romania won 11 medals (4-3-4).
