President Nicusor Dan declared on Wednesday that the Romanian state must improve its interaction with citizens and that the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MAI), the prosecutor's offices and the courts must send strong messages against domestic violence and drug use.

"We are at an anniversary time, but I believe that we must talk about the future and in my opinion there are three things we must look at: one general and two particular ones. First of all, you are part of the Romanian state's administration and all of us - the Romanian state's administration - must improve our interaction with citizens and we must earn the citizens' trust through our daily acts," Nicusor Dan told the anniversary Gala "163 Years Since the Establishment of the Ministry of Internal Affairs", organized at the National Museum of Art.

He pointed out that the Ministry of Internal Affairs, prosecutors' offices and courts must send strong messages against domestic violence and drug use.

"A very, very important topic: the condition of women in our society. Domestic violence and, more seriously, all the murder cases that have arisen from this, which we have seen in the last period, we - and when I say we I mean the Ministry of Internal Affairs, prosecutors' offices, courts of law - must convey to society that the Romanian state is a strong state and to convey to those ex-partners who are just thinking that they could threaten their ex woman partner that the Romanian state will quickly come against them if they dare to do so. (...) The problem of drug use, especially drug use among young people. Again, it is an issue that concerns the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the specialized structures of the prosecutors' offices, the courts of law. (...) It is a global phenomenon. No one, ever in contemporary times has eradicated this phenomenon, but the Romanian state must send a strong message against this phenomenon", declared the head of state.

He said that the work of the MAI employees is difficult.

The Minister of Internal Affairs, Catalin Predoiu, presented the head of state with the ministry's honorary plaque.
