The Romanian fire crew deployed to Greece was engaged on Friday in battling a wildfire near Charvalo, in the East Attica region, the Emergency Management Inspectorate General said in a release, adding that the intervention is difficult due to the dry vegetation, rugged terrain and the winds of up to 8 Beaufort that fan the flames.
Romanian rescuers are operating with seven special vehicles, including a large-capacity truck with a 30,000-liter water tank.
The Romanian firefighters are carrying out their mission under the direct coordination of the Greek liaison officers, being tasked with protecting homes from the blaze, evacuating people, preventing the fire from spreading to inhabited areas, supplying water to the host country's emergency vehicles, and creating and maintaining a protective line between the outbreak and unaffected areas.
40 Romanian firefighters and nine pieces of technical equipment participate until September 15 in the European Union's civil protection efforts in support of the Greek authorities, working alongside response teams from Austria, the Czech Republic, France, the Republic of Moldova and Bulgaria.
