Chief of Defense Staff General Gheorghita Vlad said on Tuesday that Romania must have "a population prepared to support a war effort", stressing that the Army, together with the Emergency Management Inspectorate General, has "many training programs underway".
He explained that resilience requires readiness for multiple crises, from fires and earthquakes to floods, as well as the capacity to support defense efforts.
Vlad announced that the Army can train up to 2,000 young volunteers this year, with a maximum capacity of 10,000 annually.
"Starting this year, following amendments to Law No. 446 on defense preparation, we intend to bring young people into Ministry of National Defense units on a voluntary basis, to be trained in basic military specialization. Depending on budget allocations, we plan to train 1,000 - 2,000 servicemen this year, and in future years we will have two or three training series annually. The Army's capacity is between 2,000 and 10,000 per year," General Vlad said.
The Chief of Defense Staff, alongside NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe General Alexus G. Grynkewich, delivered on Tuesday a press conference in Sibiu at the Multinational Corps Headquarters South-East. After meeting journalists, the two officials visited the 'Getica' National Joint Training Center in Cincu.
