Rail operator CFR has reached the requirements of Milestone 73 of the PNRR, for signing contracts for 100% of the works to modernize and renew the railway infrastructure, according to a company's release.
"The National Railway Company CFR informs that, through PNRR, Romania, within Component 4. Sustainable Transport, has been allocated the sum of 3.48 billion euros for projects in the railway field ", the press release reads.
According to the cited source, by the end of 2023, CFR accumulated 8 design and execution contracts and 8 consultancy contracts, signed within the two major projects from the "Modernization" chapter, respectively "Modernization of the Arad - Timisoara - Caransebes railway" and "Rehabilitation and electrification of the railway line Cluj Napoca - Oradea - Episcopia Bihor", 123 "Quick Wins" type works contracts and 3 Bucharest - Pitesti "Renewals" type work contracts, representing 100% of the total execution contracts included in the PNRR for the modernization of the railway infrastructure, within which CFR is the Contracting Authority.
"Thus, the value of all work contracts at the end of 2023 reached the threshold allocated by the program. In this case it can be said that CFR has reached the requirements of Milestone 73 of the PNRR, for signing contracts for 100% of the modernization and renewal works of the railway infrastructure. During the year 2023, at the level of the Ministry of Investments and European Projects, as the national coordinator of reforms of the PNRR, it was considered the identification of a package of eligible projects within the Modernization Fund Mechanism, which led to the proposal to take over the electrification projects Constanta - Mangalia and Radulesti - Giurgiu, taking into account the specifics of the two projects, which align with the principle of sustainability of green projects", the press release reads.
"Considering the continuous underfunding of investment projects in the transport infrastructure over the last 30 years, we consider that CFR, in its capacity as beneficiary and contracting authority, succeeded in the period 2022-2023 to achieve, within the PNRR, all the objectives proposed, 100% degree of contracting, with all 142 contracts signed, within which approximately 967 KM of railway will be modernized, electrified, repaired and renewed, until the year 2026", the release adds.
