The Save Romania Union (USR) Political Committee validated on Friday the nomination of Radu Miruta for the Ministry of National Defence and of Irineu Darau for the Ministry of Economy, Digitalisation, Entrepreneurship and Tourism.
"The USR Political Committee, meeting online, today, 19 December, validated the proposals for the Ministry of National Defence and the Ministry of Economy, Digitalisation, Entrepreneurship and Tourism. The current Minister of Economy, Radu Miruta, was validated as the proposal for the position of Minister of Defence, and will also take on the role of Deputy Prime Minister. Radu Miruta (40) holds a PhD in Telecommunications and is also a graduate of the Faculty of Law. He had a career in major telecommunications companies, and in 2020 became an MP on the USR lists, now serving his second term. As Minister of Economy, he played an essential role in negotiating contracts within the extensive SAFE defence financing package, through which Romania is allocated over EUR 16.6 billion," a USR press release sent to AGERPRES states.
For the leadership of the Ministry of Economy, Senator Irineu Darau was validated as the proposal. According to the cited source, Irineu Darau (39) is a USR senator from Brasov serving his second term. By profession an IT specialist, he holds a degree from the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the University of Bucharest. He heads the Committee for Education, Science and Innovation and is a member of several economic and social committees in the Senate. He is the leader of the USR Brasov branch.
In the vote, 81.22% of the members of the Political Committee voted in favour of validating the two nominees, 4.42% voted against, and 14.36% abstained.
USR leader Dominic Fritz stressed after the Political Committee meeting that the validation of USR's proposals for the two ministries confirms the party's firm commitment to professional, people-oriented governance.
"Radu Miruta is a natural choice for Defence, a person who has demonstrated rigour in government activity and who played an essential role in implementing the SAFE Programme - a vital programme for the modernisation of the Army and for close cooperation between the national defence industry and the Ministry of Defence. Irineu Darau brings over 15 years of solid experience in the private sector, in complex and international projects in the technology, financial and industrial sectors. He is a professional accustomed to working to high standards, with diverse teams and with responsibility for results. Through these proposals, USR once again shows that it puts competence, integrity and the public interest first. Romania needs leaders who know what they are doing and who work for people, not for systems or interest groups," Dominic Fritz said.
