Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Sorin Grindeanu, attending the County Conference of the League of Local Elected Officials in Targoviste on Saturday, urged Social Democrats to move toward change, Agerpres reports.
"I cannot ignore the fact that the 45% held by the PSD in the governing coalition does not place us in the position of the leading party. Yes, there was that negotiation last year, after which the Save Romania Union and the National Liberal Party agreed on the prime minister proposal, and we signed this protocol so that, starting this year, PSD would take over the premiership. But I repeat: neither I nor my colleagues in the party leadership anticipated things would unfold this way. We came in good faith, trying to govern for the people, with Anghel Saligny projects, with measures for pensioners and vulnerable groups," Grindeanu said.
The PSD leader added that people tell him they know most government decisions are made by the prime minister, but that "PSD is the one keeping him in office".
"I suggest that we make changes. Thank you. See you at the vote on April 20," Grindeanu told PSD officials in Dambovita County.
He also stressed that PSD should not remain in the coalition merely for the sake of stability.
"A coalition involving the Social Democratic Party makes sense only as long as it brings welfare to Romanians, as long as Romanians live better. Otherwise, we have no reason to be part of a coalition that governs in this manner. And I say this openly, without any nuance," Grindeanu concluded.
