Higher legal education represents more than an academic stage, it is one of the pillars on which the construction of a state of law and an efficient justice system rely on, also contributing to increasing citizens' trust in institutions, president Nicusor Dan emphasised on Friday.
The head of state sent a message on the occasion of the launch of the Report on the State of Higher Legal Education in Romania, which was presented by the state counselor from the Department of Administration, Public Policies and Civil Society Catalina Galer. The event was organized by the Federation of Law Students' Associations in Romania, at the Palace of Parliament.
Nicusor Dan noted, on this occasion, that when a magistrate retires from activity "prematurely", he "leaves behind gaps that are difficult to fill" and that Romania needs a generation of "competent" and "civically involved" jurists.
"I greet and congratulate the Federation of Law Students' Associations of Romania for drafting the Report on the State of Higher Legal Education. Your analysis, carried out with objectivity and courage, provides a necessary x-ray of the progress and challenges of this field and brings the concerns of students into the public debate, thus amplifying their voice. Higher legal education represents more than an academic stage: it is one of the pillars on which the construction of a rule of law and an efficient justice system relies on, also contributing to increasing citizens' trust in institutions," said the president.
According to him, efforts to align academic standards with good European practices in the field of legal education must be continued, so that Romania has competitive graduates and the legal system is strongly oriented towards performance and equity.
Nicusor Dan mentioned that thorough professional training is vital, and that faculties should not only prepare specialists, but also "strong characters, people who understand the values, principles and civic responsibility that the legal profession entails".
He advocated for closer collaboration between academia, the legal professions and public institutions.
Students must have access to real practice, dedicated mentors, and modern resources, the president added.
Nicusor Dan also welcomed the initiatives to digitise university libraries, introduce exams based on critical thinking, diversify master's programmes and expand international partnerships initiated by law faculties
