President Nicusor Dan, Chief of the Defence Staff, General Gheorghita Vlad, and Minister of National Defence Radu Miruta will participate in the events organised in Piata Unirii in Iasi to mark the 167th anniversary of the Union of Moldavia with Wallachia, Mayor Mihai Chirica announced on Thursday.
'From abroad, though not from outside Romanian territory, we have invited the mayors with whom we have twinning agreements, who have confirmed their presence alongside us. Of course, we are expecting the central authorities who will accompany the President of Romania, representatives of the Government and other institutions. So far, Minister of National Defence Radu Miruta and General Gheorghita Vlad, who also leads the General Staff of the Romanian Army, have confirmed their attendance. We will try to give the event the level of decency appropriate to such an occasion,' Mayor of Iasi Mihai Chirica told a press conference, agerpres reports.
According to the quoted source, the events dedicated to the Union of the Romanian Principalities in Piata Unirii in Iasi will begin at 12:00 with a folk performance.
'In order to take advantage of milder temperatures and to attract as many people as possible, without political connotations, since this is not an election year, the 24 January celebration will be as open as possible and close to the Romanian spirit, with an emphasis on unity and our identity. At the beginning, there will be a folk show titled Noi suntem romani'(We are Romanians, ed.n.) performed by children from the Children's Palace and groups from Iasi and other regions of the country. Among the artists there will also be military ensembles, as well as the singer Margareta Clipa, who will close the first part of the show,' Mayor Chirica explained.
The artistic event will be followed, at around 14:45, by the military and religious ceremony, followed at 15:00 by an official event in the presence of President Nicusor Dan.
The programme includes the salute of the guard of honour, the national anthem, official speeches and the laying of wreaths, as well as a military parade. At around 16:20 there will be the Hora Unirii, to which all participants and guests are invited, followed by the second part of the folk show with well-known artists Veta Biris and Ion Palade. The show will focus on regional diversity, with artists from Bucovina, Transylvania, Bessarabia and Moldavia.
In the evening, from 18:00, children and all residents of Iasi can enjoy the traditional torchlight retreat.
The Mayor of Iasi assured that the event will be very well coordinated from a safety point of view, with traffic restrictions imposed, as in previous years, along the route between Piata Unirii and the Palace of Culture.
'We do not foresee any participation that could disrupt the proper course of these events, because everyone is Romanian. Those who love us and those who vote for other parties are all part of the body of this nation,' Mayor Mihai Chirica added.
